Typically, the variable region of both light and heavy chains corresponds to the variable region of antibodies derived from one species of mammal (e.g., mouse, rat, rabbit) with the desired specificity, affinity, and/or capability while the constant regions are homologous to the sequences in antibodies derived from another species (usually human) to avoid eliciting an immune response in that species.
